Stocking up for Winter

Yes, it's a very scary thought - but winter is already on its way and our free weekends were numbered. Andy needed to use one of those weekends to go out in the woods and find some fire fuel, so on the 10th, he headed for the hills with his Dad and his buddy Zack. They took 2 trucks and managed to fill them both to the top, even though the chainsaw tried to quit on them!
Once they returned and unloaded the trucks, Don and Zack left and it was time to do the real work - split all the rounds and stack them.
Andy started out with some gusto, with the ax. It wasn't long before he was taking longer breaks and the pile wasn't looking any smaller. Last year, he had stacked the rounds and only split them as he needed - and it didn't seem like that great a task! But, he wanted to split them all this time so they could dry better and be more convenient. Fortunately, he remembered (not long before closing time) that a place in town rents out log splitters, and took off to town. This is the quitting scene:And here is a funny pose of his new toy and an aching back :)After while he let me run the machine (!) and we were quite the team - loading it and pushing the lever. Hard work - let me tell ya!
In about two hours, we had the intimidating pile of rounds down to a pile of bark and a new intimidating pile of split wood that needed to be stacked. And neither of us needed to see a chiropractor...
