Rounds to 30

What's all of this?  Well, it'd be the scene of my birthday party!
Andy had found a Mercury Flathead motor during his work travels to Montana last Fall and brought it home for me.  We'd worked a little here and there to clean it up and start tearing it apart, but we were stuck with two bolts that wouldn't budge and plenty of other things to work on instead.  I decided that for my birthday, I wanted to tackle the motor again with some extra help.  So, Andy, Forrest, JoeB, and I gained up on the Flathead...and we won!
The primary reason for tearing the motor down was to get to the crank.  You see, Mercury cranks are desirable for people rebuilding Flatheads because they have a longer stroke than a Ford crank.  So, even though this motor of mine is pretty seized up and nasty, this valuable crank and few other odds and ends can be used to build a running motor for my Model A.
The coveted crank
Where the crank used to be
As if that wasn't enough fun, I requested a 2nd birthday party!  (you can do that.  you should try it.)
The scene of party #2:
Caterpillar
Red Devi

The finished Carcassonne board.
Beth's Tower of Thief/Monk/Farmer Dudes
Accidental Italy...with Sicily to boot! (don't mind that it's flipped)

Club Build

For this month's car club meeting, we got to help Cory work on his hot rod.  Club builds are two long days in the shop, splitting up the tasks but coming together to figure out puzzles as they come up.

At the end of the weekend, Cory's truck was mocked-up pretty well: motor and tranny in on permanent mounts, steering figured out, front and rear suspension almost done, and bed squared up and mounts made to attach it to the frame.

Cory's goal is to drive this to our car show in June!  Exciting stuff.

GREEN!

St. Patty's Day this year was a day to celebrate the tiny green flower shoots popping up through the snow...

...and it was light outside after we got home from work!
Hooray!  Spring is really here isn't it?

In Like a Lion

The forecast for the end of the month is promising given that this is how we were greeted the morning of March 1st!

-Swap Meet Season Begins-

The past two months, we've been putting our extra time and energy toward Andy's new business, with plans to really get its name out there this year.
Besides staying on top of the online side of things - updating the company website, and keeping up with customer requests through Ebay - we also needed to come up with a booth display for face-to-face sales.  Andy put a lot of time into designing and creating the pieces to an eye-catching, professional sales booth:
[Display Motor shows the parts he can make in bright orange]
[Exhaust flanges for 27 different motors represented above, with inventory stored neatly away in cubbies that also serve as the customer transaction counter.  Clever!]
We just returned from our test-run with the set-up!  Andy and I, and our friend Nickie B vended at the Puyallup "Early Bird" Swap Meet last weekend.  We met some wonderful people in the car-building community, made a few sales, and really enjoyed this chance to shake hands with our customers and test our readiness to run this operation in person.
Next stop: Portland Swap Meet.  The biggest deal of its kind in the Northwest!

Something Fishy about this Christmas...

We brightened up our house with a tree this year.  It smelled lovely and went well in our wildlife-themed living room with these ornaments:
Susan was here to pick up Jersey, and helped to decorate the tree.  When all the boxes were empty, we realized we were short a tree-topper and went in search of something unique for our fishy Christmas tree.  Believe it or not, we found the perfect topper in the first store we checked!

We've just returned from our time away for Christmas, and tried out our new sushi-making kit (thank you Margaret and Greg) to make dinner tonight.  Making the rice was quite a process, made easier by our new rice cooker (thank you Suzie and Chad).  After that, it was just slicing up veggies, frying tempura tilapia and broccoli, and figuring out how to roll it all up in delicious a combination.
Success!!

Now, we're settling in to enjoy the rest of 2010, hoping you all make the most of it as well!

Adventures with Our Redheaded Guest

We were the lucky winners of a month with Suzie and Chad's Jersey!
I think they called it dog-sitting, but the kind of experience that comes to mind with that word really doesn't describe our weeks of adventure with this sweet pup.
Jersey had barely settled in when we decided to invite a crowd to our house.  Many of Andy's friends, who've stayed close from childhood through high school and college, were within 30 miles of each other for the first time since our wedding!  Vaughn (we hadn't seen for 2 years) down from Alaska, Nick (we hadn't seen for 3 years) over from his busy life in western Washington, Garrett and Phil up from Lewiston, Dylan just out from Pullman.  They gathered at our place for games and some serious catching up.  Being the people-dog Jersey is, she absolutely loved all the company, and they were quite fond of her too!  It was sooooo good to see them together again - reminiscing old stories, and sharing new ones.  Here, Vaughn is telling the dramatic story of his sheep hunt in Alaska earlier this Fall while trying to plan his next pool shot:
Just days later, that crazy wind came whipping through here, and Miss Jersey got to put up with us learning how to survive happily without electricity.
As soon as that adventure was over, our backyard was transformed into a winter wonderland.  Surprisingly, this Portland pup loved the fluffy white stuff she rarely sees.
The only trouble was, her squeaky toy froze so solid after being out in the snow that she couldn't chew on it!  So she'd come in, tired from playing, and have to work at getting her toy satisfactorily squishy again.
New snow came day after day, and she never tired of it.  I think she actually looked forward to the shoveling chore each morning and evening!  Maybe because she got to hide her toy in freshly piled snow over and over, instead of doing the work...
In the midst of the endless snow, we had another gathering at our place.  We'd already seen how good Jersey was with stranger company, but this time we had two other dogs in attendance.  And, one of them was Aunt Donna's Peaches, a toy poodle puppy, weighing in at a whoppin' two pounds of nervous energy.
They played so well together!
Besides being the main event at our gatherings, Jersey got to be involved in all the little parts of our day-to-day. A few times, Andy took her to work for the day, and she got to experience my office for an afternoon as well.  She passed the time watching Main Street traffic go by.
I'm afraid our home office just didn't compare to the bring-your-dog-to-work days in the big city.  Most evenings found us working on projects in the office with Jerseypup bored and snoozing at our feet, or sprawled out directly behind our chairs...'guarding' her favorite ball.
It's no wonder she's so possessive.  Every chance we got, we'd snatch her toys for countless games of hide-n-seek....
...or to make sure she still remembered the new trick we taught her (to wait when you throw the toy until you give her permission to retrieve it).  She's a smart one!
The morning Suzie was coming to take Jersey home again, we brought home our Christmas tree.  Jersey hadn't been around one before, so we didn't know what kind of reaction to expect.  She apparently liked the taste of freshly cut fir...
...but once it was in the house and glowing with ornaments and lights, she frankly could care less about it!
We bid farewell Sunday morning, and I have to admit I just caught myself checking to make sure she's not behind my office chair before I roll back.

Suzie and Chad - you can bring Miss Jersey anytime you come!  But, don't be surprised if she's a traitor.
That girl sure is fond of the Andyman!
Who wouldn't be? ;)
